Take everything you currently know about mall food and leave it at the door. There may be lots of people that aren't too crazy about eating while they are out shopping but this place is different . This blog will take you to a restaurant where people go to the mall just to eat and don't even worry about the shopping part. Lunch or dinner, you can find something for everyone on the menu. It's almost like you have the mindset that since you are out running around everywhere trying to find that perfect gift or simply back to school shopping you should just grab something quick and often times unhealthy. Subs & More in Wiregrass Commons Mall changes all that. There are lots of restaurants that come and go inside a shopping center but if you are one that can say you have been in the same mall for 21 years then there is no doubt you are doing something right.
Before we get into the menu items and food pictures, I will give you my opinion on why I think most people keep coming back (besides the fact they have amazing food). The employees that work at Subs & More are not co-workers, they are a family. They don't get out of bed and go to work here for a paycheck alone, they actually enjoy coming to work and being around the people they work with. The owners, Bernardo De Faria and his wife Cindy, are two of the nicest people you may ever come in contact with. The reason I say it is like a big family there is because everyone is treated like family, including the customers. Once you meet them it is almost impossible to walk through the food court without saying hi. Don't believe me? Next time you're in the mall go by and wave and see if Bernardo doesn't act like he has known you for years. Now to the food...
These guys make it, they make it fresh, and they make it delicious! Believe me when I say this restaurant will give you a new perspective on "mall food". Chicken wings? They got it. Philly steak and cheese? They got it. Gyros? They even have those and let me tell you, they are fine!
Let's start with the gyro... Lamb, tzatziki sauce, feta cheese, tomatoes, onions, and lettuce, all on handmade pita bread. I will admit that I was skeptical before about trying the gyro just because of the fact it had lamb but boy am I glad I gave it a try. It is one of those foods that just melts on your mouth and leaves you wishing you had more. Pairing it with either fries or onion rings and a 32 oz Coke product make it a perfect lunch or dinner combo. I will let the followong pictures speak for themselves.
Next is the philly steak and cheese which, to me, happens to be one of the best you can get! Personally, I think what makes this so delicious is the fact that they use thinly sliced ribeye steak that is perfectly seasoned and cooked just right. I'm also not sure exactly what they do to the peppers and onions before cooking but I believe they are grown in a magical place. They are that good. Once the provolone cheese melts and creates the "glue" that holds it all together, game over. Again, something you may not think about ordering while at the mall gets a perfect 10 from me. The sandwich is served on an 8" piece of Cuban bread and I recommend the beer battered vidalia onion rings as a side. You can thank me later.
Chicken wings are one of my favorite things to eat. The wings here are perfectly cooked and come with a heat of your choice from mild to EXTRA HOT with a sauce that is made in house. Don't want them hot? You can get them naked (the wings that is) or with barbecue sauce. I'm not a big ranch dressing fan but it seems almost impossible to eat Subs & More hot wings without dipping them in ranch. Fresh celery comes on the side and if you don't like ranch dressing you can opt for bleu cheese.
No matter what you order there is a large salad bar up front full of fresh cut veggies and accessories to make any dish complete. Pickles, mushrooms, banana peppers, bacon, cheese, and onions just to name a few. Did I mention bacon? They have some amazing salads as well. Picture a large fresh chef salad with your choice of all these toppings. Yum!
Guys, I specifically picked Subs & More with hopes Bernardo would let me highlight the amazing job he has done for over 20 years in the same place. I have known him for a long time since I started working in the mall over 10 years ago. His restaurant was always my go-to place for dinner when I was working until close. For the past 17 years he has been providing kids at 4 different schools with a healthy lunch alternative 5 days a week. My hopes are that if for ANY reason you haven't tried Subs & More you will make a plan to eat here. It really is amazing restaurant quality food in a mall setting. As good as the food is it will ultimately come in second place only to meeting Bernardo and his wonderful family that will be there to serve you. It is sure to be a place that you will visit often.

There's few things in life better than a large scoop of freshly made chicken salad. Today I got the chance to visit Hots Deli and see first hand the process of making theirs. It starts with one person slicing freshly cooked chicken breasts while another puts together the chicken salad mix. This doesn't involve cutting open bags of frozen ingredients and pouring them together because these are fresh ingredients cooked and mixed on site. The plate with fruit is also served with crackers, cranberries, and pecans.
Once the mixture is made and the chicken cut just right they are combined in a large mixing bowl and hand blended to perfection. The flavor is hard to explain in words but the one that I would use is AMAZING! It's not too salty, not too heavy on the sour cream, but just right. The fact that they sell approximately 125 pounds of chicken salad every week speaks for itself. If you think the regular chicken salad is amazing (and it is) you must try their buffalo chicken salad. OH. MY. GOODNESS. The perfect balance of ingredients makes this my new favorite. Picture the mouth watering taste of fresh chicken salad and then add a touch of heat. The measurements are adjusted before mixing and out comes something delicious, homemade buffalo chicken salad.
Don't think you can only get a scoop of chicken salad here, that's only part of it. You have the choice of a chicken salad & fruit plate, chicken salad sandwich, and they even do catering so you can order a tray of chicken salad. The sandwiches will come with your choice of bread including French White, bench Wheat, Sliced Wheatberry, Sliced Rye, or Croissant. If you're in a hurry they have what's called the "grab and go". It is a container with one healthy sized scoop of chicken salad and fruit already in the cooler out front with drinks so you can just swing by, grab your lunch, and go.
One of the best things about this deli (besides the awesome owners) is the fact that nothing is fried. Nothing. Everything is fresh made and baked. They make the chicken salad fresh every morning and the fruit is cut at the same time. If you want fresh, made with love food, Hots Deli is the place to go. They are now serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This really is Dothan's healthier alternative.
Hots Deli is located at 180 Westgate Parkway in beautiful Dothan, Alabama. Call in a to-go order at 334-671-5550 or visit their website below. You can also give them a "LIKE" on Facebook.
